Two elite soldiers with troubled pasts are enlisted for a daring mission when a deadly masked villain threatens India's defenses.

Bade Miayan Chote Miyan  Review:

Captain Rakesh aka Rocky (Akshay Kumar) and Captain Firoz aka Freddy (Tiger Shroff) are the best assets of the Indian army. They are brave, honest and unapologetically patriotic. However, they are also a bit uncontrolled and defiant. But, when it comes to tackling an imminent threat from an enemy within, there’s no one else who can be trusted. India’s future is in jeopardy because of a tech-savvy villain, who is about to unleash an AI-powered mayhem on the country that can lead to a war-like situation with its volatile neighbours. It can also destroy India’s financial and defence capabilities. It’s a clear and present danger and for our men in uniform, it’s a race against time.

Bade Miyan Chote Miyan’ gets down to business right from the very first scene that begins with the film’s antagonist, instead of its protagonists. We know that the stakes are high as co-writer and director Ali Abbas Zafar does well in building up the suspense around it. The first half is packed with a frantic pace, adrenaline-pumping action and fun banter between Akshay Kumar and Tiger Shroff. It’s pedestrian humour but the punches work in forging good chemistry between the two actors. Like when Tiger’s character constantly takes a jibe at Akshay’s age and ignorance about the Gen-Z stuff or when Akshay gets back to him by taking a swipe at his acting skills. It’s done well and blends seamlessly with their character traits. Tiger’s brooding handsome looks and chiselled body enhance his screen presence and he more than holds on to his own against Akshay Kumar. Unlike most high octane actioners, this testosterone charged film actually ends up giving its leading ladies well-defined roles and important tasks. Manushi Chiller as Captain Misha is brilliant in landing lethal blows to the bad guys.

Alaya F as the nerdy Dr Pam is also quite a hoot. The young actress shows spark with her near-perfect comic timing. Prithviraj Sukumaran as Kabir is way too sophisticated to be a menacing anti-hero. Sonakshi Sinha doesn’t have much to do in her special appearance as Captian Priya.

The narrative is powered by a masssive build-up in the first half and an unpredictable twist at the interval that raises expectations from the second half. But it pales in comparison. Logic takes a beating and we see an over-simplified solution to an apocalyptic problem. The complex geo-political situation between India, Pakistan and China is used as a backdrop and a reason to fire up some heavy patriotic lines. However, it’s the relentless action and innovative stunts that remain consistently top-notch. Marcin Laskawiec’s cinematography successfully captures the scale of a war-like situation and constant tension, which is quite relatable, in the times we live in. The thumping musical score by Vishal Mishra is refreshing, especially the song ‘Mast Malang’. The excessive usage of computer graphics during stunts, explosions and car chases is interspersed well within the scenes.

Director Ali Abbas Zafar, who is known for giving explosive entertainers like the ‘Tiger’ series, once again displays his expertise in the genre. ‘Bade Miyan Chote Miyan’ goes out all guns blazing to make for an entertaining potboiler with heart-pounding action, cheeky humour and barely a dull moment.

Martin Movie review: The unbalanced teenager Martin Mathias (John Amplas) travels to Braddock, Pennsylvania, by train. During the night, he breaks in a cabin and kills a passenger in a peculiar way, injecting drug with a syringe and draining her blood to drink in a careful way. Then he meets his old cousin Tateh Cuda (Lincoln Maazel) in the station and they go to Cuda's home where Martin will live. Martin was raised by his dysfunctional mother and believes that he is an 84 year-old vampire. The religious Cuda also believes that the teenager is Nosferatu and uses crosses and garlic in the house to protect himself and his granddaughter Christina (Christine Forrest) that lives with him from Martin..

Along the days, Martin befriends Christina, who has a problematic relationship with her boyfriend Arthur (Tom Savini), while continues to attack persons every now and then. Further, he uses the telephone to tell the truth about vampires to a radio show. Martin has a love affair with Christina, but when she commits suicide, Cuda does not believe that his granddaughter killed herself.

"Martin" is a strange and bizarre low-budget vampire movie with a totally different story. There is a documentary on the DVD where George Romero gives details about the production that uses real locations. He also tells that "Martin" is his masterpiece. Martin's daydreams with black-and-white are ambiguous and the viewer never knows whether whey we recollections or his imagination. My vote is seven.

There isn't any magic. It's just sickness." says Martin (John Amplas) in response to Cuda (Lincoln Maazel), his old-country Catholic uncle. George Romero delivered a movie that strips away all magic from the vampire mythos and replaces it with the gritty realism of sickness...so of course it was filmed on location in Pittsburgh in the Braddock neighborhood. The extras were local residents from the Braddock neighborhood of Pittsburgh and this movie really reminded me of the year I spent in school in Pittsburgh. George Romero cast his own wife, Christine Forrest, as the female lead "Christina".

She has a very pretty but vaguely Eastern-European look as does Lincoln Maazel who plays Uncle Cuda. For some reason these characters seemed very familiar to me and oddly comforting. Many of the extras and actors and actresses looked like other people I had encountered during my own time in Pittsburgh, twenty years after this film was made. The music in this movie is a haunting religious sounding score. The shots of daily life in 1977 Pittsburgh were useful in grounding this vampire movie and presenting vampirism as just another shitty disease. Rather than exhibit mystic powers to lure and attack his victims, Martin is an awkward young man who stalks very average non-glamorous women and injects them with drugs and even then only barely beats these women in battle. Then Martin sucks the blood from their unconscious bodies after slicing them open with a razor blade. Martin then hides his crime by making the woman's death by making it look like a suicide. Braddock is one of the most run-down sections of Pittsburgh — the decay evident in the movie contrasts nicely with Martin's fantasies, shot in black and white like a romantic vampire movie, where women willingly give up their throats to him. Pittsburgh (similiar to Cleveland) has always been a talk radio town so the scenes involving Martin calling into a local DJ ring true. Martin becomes a regular caller known as "The Count" on a late night radio show. I enjoyed the movie and will probably check out other Romero movies.

A modern-day avatar of Vishnu, a Hindu god, who is believed to have descended to earth to protect the world from evil forces.

Director: Nag Ashwin

Writer:    Nag Ashwin

Stars :     Mrunal ThakurDeepika PadukoneAmitabh Bachchan

Review: ‘Kalki 2898 AD’ begins with a gripping depiction of the aftermath of the Mahabharata war, when Lord Krishna cursed Ashwatthama (Amitabh Bachchan) with immortality. This sets the stage for a fictional narrative within a star-studded cinematic universe, deeply rooted in Hindu mythology. A story about the tenth avatar of Lord Vishnu, who is prophesied to arrive on a white horse, signaling the end of the Kali Yuga.

Writer-director Nag Ashwin crafts his story around it, but the film is a precursor to what you can expect in the future installments of this massive universe. To do that, he uses his imaginative prowess and transports the audience into a visually stunning world. This is the biggest and most obvious strength of the film. Ashwin, with the help of his cinematographer Djordje Stojiljkovic, takes us into the lone existing city of Kasi, ruled by the evil Commander Manas (Saswata Chatterjee) and led by God King Supreme Yaskin (Kamal Haasan), who lives in a mysterious powerhouse known as Complex. It’s a dark world where fertile women are killed and men are enslaved. The only ray of hope, perhaps, is Bhairava (Prabhas) and a motley bunch of rebels from Shambhala until they rescue one of the subjects from the Complex, SUM80 (Deepika Padukone), the bearer of the awaited avatar.

It’s a simple story thrown into a complex web of too many characters and subplots, some of which have little to do with the broader narrative. Ashwin’s plot meanders into unnecessary detours so many times that it gets tiring to wait for it to get back on track. The entire first half suffers from this back and forth, especially with Prabhas’ character. The futile attempts to generate comedy, even with a veteran like Brahmanandam (who plays Bhairava’s landlord Rajan), fall flat, much like his half-baked love angle with Roxie (Disha Patani) that could have been completely done away with.

Thankfully, the film picks up pace in the second half with Amitabh Bachchan’s re-entry. The veteran superstar wows us with his infectious energy in high-octane action scenes. Even with all the special effects and latest tools of computer animation, he manages to breathe life into his character and bring a level of realism into Ashwatthama’s unbridled power. Deepika Padukone shows commendable restraint and skill in playing a subdued character who is destined to eventually be powerful.

South superstar Shobhana provides good support as the wise Mariam. Saswata Chatterjee comes across as somewhat caricaturish in his role of Commander Manas. Kamal Haasan once again delivers a role that is strikingly distinctive and sends chills down the spine. Special appearances by Vijay Deverakonda, Mrunal Thakur, Dulquer Salmaan, S.S. Rajamouli, and Ram Gopal Varma leave a brief but memorable impact.

The film's production design by Nitin Zihani Choudhary deserves special mention for creating a captivating visual landscape that enhances the immersive experience. Although the music score by Santhosh Narayanan is a letdown, the background score effectively complements the film's narrative, elevating key moments.

Kalki 2898 AD’ is undeniably a larger-than-life visual spectacle that transports viewers into a vividly imagined universe. In fact, the film’s visual quality is so high that it overshadows many of its obvious flaws by engaging the audience into the atmospherics of the make-believe world of Kasi and the Complex. Moreover, it's a concept that can spark imaginative experiences beyond the cinema. If you enjoy diving into a world of epic battles between gods, good, and evil, then 'Kalki 2898 AD' offers quite a satisfying audio-visual experience, even though it may require some patience.

Maharaj  Movie Review:

In this Nithilan Swaminathan directorial, a man named Maharaja (Vijay Sethupathi) files a police complaint because the 'Lakshmi' in his house goes missing. When he goes to the police station to file a complaint, there's a thief in custody who is named Police. Maharaja, the film, is full of such droll contradictions.

To put it matter-of-factly, this is a film that revolves around the lives of two fathers. One is played by Vijay Sethupathi, and the other by Anurag Kashyap. The former lost his wife (Divya Bharathi) while his daughter Jothi was still a toddler. Meanwhile, the latter lives happily with his wife (Abhirami) and a daughter.

Maharaja could have been a very straightforward or ‘we know what's in store’ film for the audience if it was plain sailing. But the manner in which the story has been told has unquestionably made all the difference. Throughout its runtime, there are multiple faulty and disoriented moments. But to give credit where it is due, the film manages to be engaging throughout. Maharaja is one of those films that keeps you invested. You feel so not because everything that plays out on screen is pronounced, but because the makers have been successful in generating anticipation as to what happens next.

With that said, there are many instances in the film that feel rather engineered or contrived. This sentiment is particularly true for one comic moment in the film where Maharaja narrates how Lakshmi went missing. The fact that who/what Lakshmi is is supposed to make us laugh, and it is indeed laughable that this man has approached the police just because of who/what went missing. But the makers overstretch the reactions of those hearing his story. Yes, the situation is funny, but why make it so in your face that makes us feel as if too much is being done.

Right from the first look of the film, the makers have made it clear that this is going to be a violent film. With its lead named Maharaja, you would expect that you were in for a mass outing right from the start. But, rather excitingly, the film starts with a fun game of Antakshari, and initially, Vijay Sethupathi is not presented as an out-and-out hero or as someone to fear. First, we see him working in a saloon and asking for leave from his employer. The very next time we see him, he is in a shop, selecting toys from a fancy store.

A point of contention as far as this film is concerned is the way it has chosen to portray violence, specifically violence against women. In many of our films, violence is used more as a varnishing tool, even if the story doesn't require it. A contentious aspect of Maharaja is the way it has used violence against women as a tool to show how terrible the bad guys are. For instance, there are many ways to show characters in a film in a negative light. One obvious trait for us to hate a character is if that person is physically abusive towards women. In this film, that angle comes across as if it is used only as a tool to showcase how bad the antagonists are. On the other hand, they could have treated the issue with more sensitivity.

What Maharaja also gets wrong is the characterisation of its antagonists, including Anurag Kashyap. Just having a big name as an actor in your film doesn't guarantee that the audience will connect with the character they are playing. The role has to be fleshed out, and that's what's missing from this film. We are told and shown that the antagonists are ruthless and terrible human beings. But the film does a bad job of fleshing out their characters. But the casting of Anurag Kashyap for this role makes sense, as the makers would have wanted to have an actor who has the presence to hold their own against Vijay Sethupathi as the antagonist. But neither the character nor the acting register after a point. As long as the focus is on Maharaja and the police officers investigating his complaint, the film manages to be smooth sailing. Sadly, things start to fluctuate as the focus shifts to the antagonists.
Vijay Sethupathi is wonderful in his 50th film, and he has a well-written role at his disposal. The makers have definitely put in extra effort in conceptualising his character, as almost all the actions that he does and almost all the dialogues that he says have a payoff. And, the actor delivers. But this care for detail isn't given to the characters played by the other popular actors. Abhirami, Mamta Mohandas, Bharathirajaa and Divyabharathi seem to just be there because the makers wanted to rope in known names and not because their presence made any difference to the character or the plot.
